Set a few rules. Let the lines find their way.
Each line takes a walk through an invisible field of directions. Nearby lines follow similar paths, so a little mathematics becomes a landscape of currents. The seed makes the randomness repeatable: the same settings always make the same picture.

This is Conway’s Game of Life, devised by mathematician John Conway in 1970. No player controls the outcome after the starting pattern is set. Gliders travel, oscillators pulse, and sometimes everything settles into stillness. Try the pulsar, then step through it one generation at a time.
